Central to this design is a meandering pathway symbolising the journey out of homelessness. Narrow at its start, with broken paving intersected by boulders, as it passes design elements that represent
the work of the Pathway charity, such as a resting bench, a reclaimed timber pergola, and a reflective pool, it widens and becomes easier to navigate. Alnus glutinosa ‘Imperialis’ and Corylus avellana trees provide dappled coverage for a textural combination of shade-loving ferns, grasses and large-leaved perennials.
While botanical treasures such as Astilboides tabularis and the striking Lilium ‘Claude Shride’, which needs a good spring to make it to the show, provide some colour within the shades of green. Five individual mycelium structures, grown using waste from last year’s show, reflect the care networks the charity helps create and the nurturing support of mycelium within woodland environments, but also connect to the principle of using only reclaimed materials in the garden.
