Welcome to Gardens Illustrated Masterclass 2021: A series of three online expert lectures aimed at offering you an illuminating, entertaining and inspiring look into creating great gardens.

And the first of our lectures is with Katy Merrington, cultural gardener at The Hepworth Wakefield.

The Hepworth Wakefield Garden - Summer (31st July 2020)

The Hepworth Wakefield has rapidly established itself as one of the key cultural destinations in the north of England. The gallery has been enhanced by newly created gardens created by renowned designer Tom Stuart-Smith and gardened by Katy Merrington.

This unique space is free to all visitors and open 24-hours a day, year round. But this is no ordinary public garden. Here is a rich and varied, contemporary space of the utmost flower-filled creativity that both delights and inspires.

Katy will deliver a Gardens Illustrated masterclass on how she and her team bring this intimate garden to life with year-round interest, giving you the insight into creating your own year-round flower garden.

What will be covered

  • Creating year-round beauty in a flower garden
  • Using bulbs, perennials, shrubs and trees to create create successional colour throughout the seasons
  • Techniques for nurturing new planting and caring for soils
  • Achieving characterful planting combinations with sculptural qualities
  • An insight into resilient plants for challenging corners.
  • Tips on seasonal tasks and expert perennial management.

How it works

Once you sign up, you will receive an email with the details of the event which you can save into your calendar, and a link to join the masterclass. When the masterclass begins, click the link and you'll be put straight through to the event.

You will be reminded an hour before the masterclass starts, so you don't forget.

You can submit questions for Katy during the event, which will be posed to her by horticulturalist, journalist and Gardens Illustrated writer Alys Fowler.

Katy has worked in some of the best gardens in the UK and USA including Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh at Logan, Dumfries & Galloway, Tresco Abbey Garden, Isles of Scilly and Longwood Gardens: Pennsylvania, USA. At The Hepworth Wakefield Katy has nurtured the garden from the construction phase onwards, working closely with Tom Stuart-Smith to build a flourishing oasis rich in successional colour and character.
