The London College of Garden Design (LCGD) has announced the award-winning garden designer Jo Thompson as its new head of garden design studies from this September. The Garden Design Diploma is the LCGD's flagship professional training programme, with many graduates already having gone on to successful careers in garden and landscape design.
Jo joins the LCGD alongside garden and landscape designer Duncan Cargill, one half of the design studio Cargill Sykes, who will become deputy head of garden design studies. Well-suited to the role, Duncan has experience educating and mentoring designers to nurture creative confidence and technical expertise.
The two designers will continue to create gardens for their own clients while working at the LCGD, where they will oversee curriculum development, student learning and industry engagement. They take up their new posts at the start of an exciting new chapter for the college, which is working to strengthen its teaching with hiring practising professionals who already influence the garden design industry.

Jo Thompson is one of the world's top garden designers, whose work has most recently been showcased in The Archers 75th Anniversary Garden at RHS Badminton Flower Show this month, and at RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2025. She is known for her romantic, colour-led approach to garden design, and has a personable teaching style, which helps to make complex principles more accessible for students.
"It's a huge honour to be asked to take on this role at the London College of Garden Design," Jo said. "The college has been incredibly influential in fostering new design talent over the last 20 years, and I am really proud to now have the opportunity to work with them.
"I know just how important good guidance and mentorship is, and together with Duncan, I’m looking forward to being able to work with the next generation of garden designers, helping them to understand how to create gardens by going beyond the textbooks and digging deeper into what makes a truly successful outdoor space."

Jo and Duncan will be taking up their new roles in September 2026.
