Lauded international garden designer Dan Pearson is known as a knowledgeable plantsman and has chosen his top two plants for late summer, direct from his own home garden, Hillside in Somerset.
These are the plants he couldn't live without in August and September, which come into their own at the end of the growing season, offering interest as other plants have finished, and lasting into autumn.
His choices are the ornamental grass Pennisetum macrourum, and the tall perennial Eryngium paniculatum. Both need some space to be at their best. Pennisetum offers beautiful movement in the borders at this time of year; while the Eryngium makes for a real focal point with its tall stems and spikes, as well as a boon for biodiversity.
