Our round-up of the best autumn plant fairs to find quality plants, shrubs and trees

Autumn is the perfect time to plant shrubs, trees and hardy perennials. There are a selection of autumn plant fairs still happening, but you should always check before you travel. Many of the fairs request that you book tickets ahead of your visit.

The Generous Gardener Autumn Plant Sale

This year is a strange one for everybody, but the Generous Gardener is planning its Specialist Plant Sale on September 11, this year on the cricket pitch to ensure social distancing. View an extensive range of unusual plants from leading nurseries, such as Chase Plants, Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants, and Cotswold Garden Flowers. 11 September, 10am-2pm. £5. Rare Plant Fair at The Bishop’s Palace, Wells

This Somerset venue is holding it’s autumn Rare Plant Fair with the help of a selection of nurseries from across the South West. The event is run in association with Rare Plant Fairs, managed by Ian and Teresa Moss.

Tickets must be booked in advance. £7 per adult. Palace passholders have free entry but tickets must be booked in advance. Hourly slots will be allocated throughout the day.

Malvern Garden and Plant Fair

This new series of plant fairs will take place in the open air at Worcestershire’s Three Counties Showground. Taking place over 12 and 13 September, the plant and garden fair will be offering a restricted number of tickets and will open from 10am to 4pm on both days. A number of exclusive early arrival tickets will be available to book in advance, allowing visitors to arrive from 8.30am. There will also be 14 nurseries in the plant and bulb market, including Hillyards of Oundle, Rose Cottage Plants and Freeman Plants.The Early Door Arrival adult tickets are priced at £25, RHS/TCAS Members £20 for 8.30 am onward entry. For standard entry, from 10-4 pm, tickets are priced at £12.50. RHS/TCAS Members tickets cost £10. Under 16s go free. 12 and 13 September. Three Counties Showground, www.threecounties.co.uk

This year, the RHS Garden Wisley Flower Show has been cancelled. But next year’s is being planned already, so watch out for that.

Helmingham Hall Autumn Plant Fair with Artisan Market

The Helmingham Hall Autumn Plant Fair is continuing this year, with tickets only available in advance. It runs on 20th September and will feature specialist nurseries and artisan products, plus advice on wildlife conservation in your garden.  20 September, Entry times are from 10am, 11.30am and from 1.00pm. £8. Llanover House, Nr Abergavenny

Holkham Hall Plant Market

The 18th century walled garden at Holkham Hall is a beautiful spot for a plant fair. There will be a host of regional nurseries displaying plants and other gardening essentials as well as a selection of stalls. Entry to the fair is ticket only and you are encouraged to book this in advance. Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September 2020, 10am-4pm. Tickets: Adult £3.50, Child £1.75, Family (2+3) £10. As far as we can make out, this year it will be a virtual event, running from 2 October and the full blown event will be back on Villa Erba, Lake Como in 2021. eng.orticolario.it

The famous Great Dixter Autumn Plant Fair will go ahead this year, in line with government restrictions and guidance.
