HIKOI Garden Tours

HIKOI Garden Tours is a small landscape tourism venture, run by Ian Henderson and Penny Cli n. We are based in Aotearoa New Zealand. HIKOI is the Maori concept of a walk or journey.

We offer inspirational journeys primarily for landscape professionals and garden enthusiasts to countries all over the world. Our next trips are planned for Spain, Morocco and Portugal in May 2019 and an autumn trip to Japan in October 2019.

The Moorish courtyards of Spain, Portugal and Morocco express the nest distillation of Islamic gardens. Experiencing the harsh desert environment near Marrakech makes sense of the oasis-like character of the gardens of this region. Please see our website for itinerary highlights.

Our Japan tour immerses you in the Zen temples and Shinto shrines of the old cultural capital of Kyoto and its many World Heritage dry-raked (karesansui) gardens and naturalistic stroll gardens. In contrast the modern metropolis of Tokyo reveals the energetic new architecture of Japan.

Penny and Ian have 43 years of teaching landscape architecture and garden design between them. They are both founding members of Garden Design Society of New Zealand (GDSNZ) and accredited members of the Society.
Penny has extensive plant knowledge, and researches the role of urban forests. Ian’s specialism is garden history and the cultural importance of gardens in different societies.

We research gardens and their contexts of art and architecture thoroughly to make our tours informative, and suitable for professional development. Our tours are affordable, well organised, but not overly prescribed. We think tourism should enhance local communities and not be resource hungry.

We pitch our tours at a cost-effective level with three- and four-star accommodation, using public transport and walking where possible, so you are likely to come back a little fitter than when you left. We want you to return home enthusiastic, having a sense of accomplishing a lot, and feeling truly enriched. | | Penny Cliffin: |
