Cons: recycling options could be clearer

Arena sells a large selection of flowers, gifts and subscriptions, as well as potted plants. The hand-tied bouquet we tried came pre-arranged in a large blue box with hand holes, making it easy to carry upright. We were pleasantly surprised by the generous number of blooms, as well as the pretty selection of colourful flowers. They all looked great straight away, other than a few marks on some of the darker roses, which are often the first to wilt.

Arena stops the stems drying out by packing them with compostable cellophane, tied with a bamboo-linen ribbon, all secured in a recycled and recyclable cardboard box, so it’s clear Arena has thought about sustainability here, although they could make the recycling options clearer on the packaging to avoid people tossing it in landfill. Opt for a letterbox delivery to reduce your impact further. 

Inside, you get a greetings card and two compostable food sachets, and we were glad to see there were no thorns on any of the roses. Our arrangement lasted 8-10 days.

You can choose which bouquet you receive next and select your preferred delivery date, and add a different gift card with each bouquet. And there’s plenty in the box, including two food pouches, a flower info pack and an arrangement guide.

We were pleased with the selection of blooms in the two bouquets we received, and they lasted really well – over three weeks in some cases.

Best price range

Cons: rather ungainly and plain packaging

One of the biggest plus points of Bunches is the amount of choice. Subscriptions come in four size options, including a letterbox-friendly version, and many one-off deliveries are available in various sizes as hand-tied bouquets or letterbox flowers.

Bunches lists the number of each exact flower included, so you know what you’re getting. There’s also the option to buy extra gifts like chocolate and greetings cards, as well as plants and hampers.

Although the packaging was a little tricky to wrangle, we liked the selection of colourful blooms, which looked fantastic straight out of the box.

Petalon

Best for seasonal blooms

Cons: did not last as long as I would have liked, arranged to be viewed from one angle

When our Farm Bouquet Subscription bouquet arrived from Petalon I was pretty blown away by it. It was beautifully packaged in a sturdy box with a compostable bag and hessian around the base. The flowers were all gorgeous bright autumnal colours, including dahlias, tagetes and rudbekias. I loved the mix of foliage and flowers and it looked great in the vase.

It was recommended that the string be kept on to keep this bouquet as it was, but it seemed to be designed to be viewed from one side and as I wanted it to be on my kitchen table I took the string away and moved a few things around for it to look nicer from all sides.

The only downside of this bouquet for me was longevity. I used the plant food and changed the water regularly, but the best of the blooms only really lasted three days, with some pushing through and looking nice for four or five.

Serenata Flowers

Best welcome gift

Cons: only a couple of flower varieties in the mix, unclear from the website where the flowers are grown

The bouquet arrived really quickly after ordering which was great - the flowers weren’t personally to my taste and I found the arrangement a little twee. That being said, all of the stems looked healthy and I couldn’t see any obvious problems with the bouquet. It fit nicely into one of my vases and needed no re-arranging. 

The bouquet came well packaged with minimal plastic, which was nice.

The Serenata flowers also lasted really well with no signs of looking sad after about five days. After that I had to do a little editing and remove some spent stems here and there, particularly of the roses, a few of which went brown. However, generally the bouquet lasted well and would be a popular style with a lot of people.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the tall olive-green ‘hat’ box (complete with a large satin ribbon) from the Real Flower Company was the scent that immediately burst out of it. We’ve become accustomed to plunging our noses into a bunch of cut flowers only to find that there is no scent at all, but this bouquet, packed with over 20 pale pink, apricot and white roses, smelled simply heavenly. It immediately brought on a wave of childhood nostalgia – the roses growing in my garden smell nothing like this.

Founded in 1999 by Rosebie Morton, The Real Flower Company specialises in ‘scented flowers with character’. In season, its roses are grown on a flower farm in Hampshire. Out of season, they come from a carbon neutral and Fairtrade flower farm, Tambuzi Roses, in Kenya, and are a carbon negative business. In October, my beautifully hand tied bouquet was supplemented with aromatic herbs, ivy flowers and winter foliage and berries. It looked at its peak for well over a week in a vase, and with a bit of editing, carried on for almost two weeks.

If you want to give someone a truly beautiful and luxury treat, you can’t go wrong with a bouquet subscription from The Real Flower Company.
